After the Germanwings disaster, and in light of new evidence that the first officer practiced crashing his plane during the previous flight, the world began to call for evidence that airplane pilots were actually needed for commercial air travel.
The fact is that they are. Modern flight has so many complexities, and the flying public is so afraid of them that they sometimes say those kinds of things.
But the reality is that they are still needed for safety and convenience.
